TNB electricity bills soar in Malaysia. In George Town, residents are feeling the heat, both literally and financially, as TNB electricity bills soar due to increased air-conditioning use amidst rising temperatures. Ahmad Aidil Shukri, a local homeowner, shared his concern as his family’s electricity bill escalated significantly in recent months, reaching RM583 in April from RM320 in January. With the ongoing fasting month, the demand for a cooler environment has become indispensable, leading to air-conditioners running throughout the day.
B. Premala, a 67-year-old tuition teacher, and Jackson Tan, a 50-year-old businessman, also echoed similar struggles with managing cooling costs. Premala has noticed a RM50 to RM70 increase in her monthly bill despite minimal use of her air-conditioned rooms. Tan found a partial solution by relocating to a smaller, less sun-exposed room in his apartment, which resulted in halving his TNB electricity bill.
The surge in electricity demand for cooling solutions is evident at local appliance stores, where air-conditioners, air-coolers, and even stand fans are selling out rapidly. Muhaidah Majid, a store supervisor, reported an unprecedented increase in sales, with up to 15 air-conditioning units sold monthly, a significant jump from the usual one or two. The store has even resorted to placing colored stickers on dummy units to indicate their non-functionality. Despite the soaring electricity bill, due to hot weather, residents are hunting for air conditioned unit.
Customers are not only buying for immediate needs but are also taking advantage of government rebates on air-conditioning units, further driving sales. Meanwhile, Winx Choo, an employee at a shop specializing in various types of fans, highlighted the popularity of neck fans, which offer a hands-free cooling solution, and hand-held fans for their portability and ease of use.
The situation reflects a broader trend where individuals and families are compelled to find innovative ways to cope with the dual challenges of extreme heat and the associated rise in living costs.
